A Comparative Study of Hydraulic Press and Pneumatic Hammer as Brick Forming Machines

Abstract
A clay grog mix qf dry press consistency has been compacted in a hydraulic press and a forge hammer and an attempt has been made to assess the relative ifficiencies of these two methods by comparing ( i) the homogeneity of the compacts both as regards the composition (moisture distribution as criterion) and as regards the texture (particle size distribution as criterion), ( ii) crushing action resulting in alteration of original granulometric distribution of the mix, (iii) effect of increasing pressure and increasing number of impacts at various intensities from the hammer, on the bulk density of the resulting compacts and (iv) power consumption. Certain broad conclusions regarding the ifficiencies of the two processes have been drawn and recommendations for the adaptation of the pneumatic hammer for manufacturing refractory products have been made.
