Abstract
Tbe recent energy crisis due to steep rise in prices and also its limited availability throughout the world bas alfected the iron and steel industry very badly. Tbis is more so in our country, as bulk of the fuel oil is imported. Hence, a fresh look is necessary for better utilization and consenatioo of energy in industrial furnaces. In tbis paper, a review of the energy saving in modern steel plants has been attempted. Tbe latest trends for using better types of refractories, insulating materials, castables, mouldables and new installation techniques adopted in various plants baYe been reviewed. Advantages of using monolithic and ceramic fibres for metallurgical furnaces have also been described. The work done in the authors plant for better utilization of energy bas also been discussed.
