Abstract
Ball milling is a process of comminution where strains in the nature of dislocations,
formation of crystallites and subgrain boundary formation were shown to occur in
addition to normal particle fragmentation with increase in surface area. The phenomena
was demonstrated on alumina with X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy studies.
In the context of the above studies the nature of brittleness of alumina was outlined
and the contribution made by particle fracture during ball milling was discussed.
