Abstract
A comparative study of six reducing agents has been made for determination of traces of silicon by the heteropoly blue method. Ascorbic acid has been found to be the most suitable reducing agent in respect of sensitivity, rapidity of colour development, stability of the final colour and easy availability. The effect of iron has also been critically examined and successfully eliminated by a small addition of iron to both the test and the standard reference solutions and then complexing it with EDT A. Based on these observations, an analytical procedure has been worked out and successfully employed for the determination of residual silicon in the filtrate after separation of major silica for gravimetric determination in various silicate materials.
