Abstract
The sillimanite deposit in Rewa, M.P., is extensively kaolinised at places and this
clay is found t.o be suitable for refractory: and pottery industries. Bricks conformzng
to the Indian Standard Specificathm for high heat duty refractories (IS 8) could be
made from this clay by firing at 1350° or 1400°C. The required properties could
be satisfactorily drurlopld by employin,g different forming processes.
The clay is alsc1 suitable for use in potteries and it is amenable to both jiggerjolleying
and slip casting. Crazing resistant wares could b·e prepared from the
unwashed clay and the colour of semi-vitrified wares improved by using washed
clay.
