Abstract
Problems connected with the manufacture
and use of refractories have engaged serious
attention of the Tata Iron and Steel Company
for nearly three decades. The set-up
of the TISCOs Refractories Engineering
Department is an index of this earnestness.
Not only is this organization responsible for
the maintenance of all the furnaces in the
plant and the consequential work of procurement
of materials of proper specifications,
but is equally, if not more, concerned
with research on and development of refractories
and the manufacture of the products
on a commercial scale. The first important
step in the chain of development, was the
establishment of the fully equipped Refractories
Research and Testing Laboratory in
1933 (the first of its kind in India) and the
earlier brick plant-a modification of the
abandoned sand-lime brick plant, purchased
still earlier, for the construction of the
township of Jamshedpur.
