Abstract
Sulphur balsam was prepared using turpe.1tine, exuded from
Indian variety of "Pinus". Heavy metal soaps were prepared
using rosin obtained from the same source. Sulphur
balsam containing 10% of sulphur yields better results.
The role of essential oils in liquid gold was found to he mainly
to suppress the obnoxious odour of the gold-sulphur compound.
Rosemary, Lavender and other oils could be successfully replaced
by less costly and more abundant essential oils like Eucalyptus
and M. 0. K. G.* (Indian) oils. Bismuth and other metallic
resinates seem to form a glass in which gold is dispersed. It
was found that neither bismuth nor chromium alloys with gold
to form a harder film. The adherence and wearing quality
of the gold film was found to be a function of firing process.
