Abstract
Utensils of brass and other alloys are made in India on a cottage industry basis. Graphite crucibles used for melting these alloys are mostly imported. An attempt has been made to use Indian graphite and clay in making efficient crucibles on cottage industry basis to replace the imported variety. Samba/pur and Titlagarh flake graphites can be used with satisfactory results by using highly plastic Mugma or Jubbalpur fireclay as bonding agent. Where the flakes are oriented parallel to the walls of the crucible, the surface oxidation rate is much slower. Limited use of sodium silicate gives very good strength in the green stage. Microscopic examination shows that such an arrangement of flakes with clay and sodium silicate as a bond gives a very compact and strong structure.
