Abstract
The present contribution contains the results of the attempts
made for producing vitrified translucent table ware in India
with a view to introducing their manufacture in the Indian
Ceramic Industry. Various successful attempts have been
made in the past in this direction with the production of bone
china, beleek china etc. These attempts can be resolved into
two distinct groups (i) Low biscuit and high glost fired ware
and (ii) High biscuit and low glost fired ware. In these attempts
to achieve sufficient translucency and vitrification the use of
certain auxiliary fluxes has been freely made. Though these
fluxes gave the desired vitrification and translucency, their use
has always been limited. This has been mainly on account
of processing and manufacturing difficulties to circumvent
which the production of such ware becomes slightly complex
and costly. But as such a ware is more attractive it has been
received in the market favourably and therefore the extra cost
and labour seems to be justified. In India, where no such
auxiliary flux has been ever used, the results achieved in the
present series of experiments seem to be more than justified
as theymay open out as absolutely new line of manufacture.
