Abstract
Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopic (FTIR) investigation
has been carried out to study the structural changes and coordination
of AI and Ti in the sol-gel derived aluminium titanate
system as a function of temperature (65°-l400°C). An analysis
of the FTIR spectral patterns shows that both octahedral as well
as tetrahedral coordinations are present up to 800°C. At 1100°C,
octahedral coordination is more predominant due to the formation
of ex-alumina. At 1300°C and above, the coordination is
purely octahedral due to the formation of aluminium titanate.
