Abstract
Insulating refractories belong to one of the
essential materials for the construction of furnaces
and kilns mainly to save fuel. These are
used as backings of dense refractories or as inner
linings of the heating units. Various kinds of
insulating firebricks are produced, and the desired
types are selected according to their properties
to meet the service conditions of the
heating units. Refractories having more than
50 per cent porosity are generally used for
thermal insulation. The bulk density of these
products varies usually from 0.25 to 1.52 gmfcc.
These are generally fabricated by adding combustibles
to the powdered refractory materials.
Foaming and chemical methods are also applied
to develop pores in the products. Bubbled fused
alumina or porous zirconia are also being used
currently for the production of insulating refractories.
