Abstract
A complexometric method has been worked out for rapid determination of lead and barium in silicate materials. Lead and barium are separated as sulphates from other constituents by decomposing the sample with hydrofluoric and sulphuric acids. Lead sulphate is then separated from barium sulphate by selective dissolution of the former in excess EDTA at pH 4.3 and then determined by back titrating the unconsumed EDTA with ferric sulphate using sulphosalicylic acid as indicator. Lead is calculated out from the equivalent EDTA consumed. Barium is then determined by dissolving the residue in ammoniacal excess EDTA solution and back titrating the nnconsumed EDTA with magnesium chloride at pH 10 and at 10°C using mixed indicator solution. The method is free from interferences due to other RO group elements except strontium, for which an alternative procedure has also been worked out.
