Abstract
The physico-chemical properties of three bentonites from Jammu and Kashmir and one from Gujarat have been studied. Chemical analyses and bee, dta and X-ray measurements were carried out. In addition, the characteristic properties of bentonites like swelling and thixotropy were also critically examined. The study revealed that the clay from Gujarat was essentially smectitic in character belonging to a mixed sodium and calcium base type. Of the three clays from Jammu and Kashmir, one was fairly pure montmorillonite, the other two having a large proportion of impurities mostly siliceous in nature. All the three bentonites belonged to the calcium-magnesium base type.
