Abstract
When a soda-glass is heated in contact with potassium pyro-sulphate, the surface is partially dealkalised and the process leads to an improvement in the strength and the electrical propert(!S of glass. The concentration profile of alkali ions across the partially dealkalised layer was determined and the observed increase in strength 1vas shown to be related to the thickness of the layer. The highest strength (70,000 psi) was observed in alumino-silicate glass, in which the thickness of layer was >-- 50p ..
