Abstract
In the first part of this brief review, attempt has been made in elucidating the simple and salient features of Ligand Field Theory. As a typical example, the absorption spectra of [V(H20)6] 3+ has been taken to calculate Racah parameters B and C, and the Ligand Field strength Ll. The colour imparted by iron in glass is of potential importance from technological point of view; the absorption spectra of Fe (II) and Fe (III) in different simple glasses have been discussed in terms of Ligand Field Theory in the second part of this review. The ultraviolet absorption of Fe (III) and Fe (II) (charge transfer bands) have also been discussed in terms of qualitative Molecular Orbital Theory.
