Abstract
The review covers up-to-date developments in the growth process of device grade ZnO nanowires, nanobelts and their possible technological applications for the realization of smart gas sensors usable in environmental, automotive, chemical industries and health care fields. The gas sensing mechanism in bulk ZnO as well as in ZnO nanowires and nanobelts for a wide variety of industrial gases like oxygen, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, hydrogen sulphide, ethanol, etc are addressed. In addition, the design aspects, sensitivity and limitations of various types of ZnO nano gas sensors are also discussed.
