Abstract
Compaction f!f clay grog mix of dry press consistency studied by (i) bumping under the mixs own weight, (ii) ramming with low load rammer, (iii) pressing in a die in a hydraulic press and (iv) by impacts from aforge hammer. Tamping with a low load rammer improves the bulk density by two per cent on that obtained by the method (i). By employing the methods (iii) and (iv), the bulk density increased by 19 and 25 per cent respective!)! over that obtained by the method (i). The rate of increase of bulk density with the work factor p is, dBD dp-=K(BD00 -BDp), where BD00 is the maximum possible increment in bulk density, BDp is the increment in bulk density under work factor p and K is a proportionality constant. In all the methods of compaction studied, the mechanism can be assumed to be the same as those operating in the compaction of dry powders studied earlier and their relative importance varies with the method of compaction adopted.
