Abstract
The e.ffects if substituting Na+ and Ca2+ ions by Mn2+ ions in the glass composition
Na20 16, GaO 10 and Si02 74 and partial replacement of this composition by MnO
andfor Fe20 3 on high temperature viscosiry, thermal expansion and chemical durabiliry were
studied. On replacing Na+ ion by Mn2+ ion the high temperature viscosiry and coifficient
if thermal expansion decreased and the chemical durabiliry increased. Substitution
if Ca2+ ion by Mn2+ ion had similar e.ffect but to lesser extent. On partial replacement
of the glass composition by MnO andfor Fe20 3, the high temperature viscosiry decreased and
chemical durabiliry increased.
