DESIRABLE TRENDS IN GLASS MANUFACTURE

Abstract
Historical development of the glass industry in India is given. Figu1·es of the installed capacity and actual production of items like bottle.~, containers, sheet glass, bangles, etc., are given. It is seen that only 40.% of the installed capacity is utilized at preSŁnt. Some types of glasses like containe1·s for the modern antibiotics like penicillin a11.d streptomycin, as also optical 'Jlass for scientific and opthalmic use and fibre glass a?'e not made yet in this count?'y and these should be installed. A plea is made for the use of local 1·aw mattrials to bring about regional self sufficiency.
