Abstract
Asbestos is a Greek name meaning eternal and indestructible. In Romau liter,l.ture asbest::>s has been called 'Amianthus' meaning undefiled. The min.eral is known as 'Sa.nge resha' in Hindustani. It had been used itl ancient times for the weaving of cloth and for lamp wicks. A towel of asbestos was presented to the King of Ceylon by Emperor Asoka of Patliputra (present Patna, Bihar).1 The asbestos deposits have been actively worked for the past 75 years, but the mineral has attained great importance in commerce and industry only within the last 3 decades.
