| Abstract |
| The clay which forms the subject matter of the present
contribution occurs in the Banda District of the United
Provinces. This district lies in the southern part of
the province and contains rocks which are mostly
sandstones deposited during the Vindhyan Era. The
rocks of this period supply excellent building material,
e. g., building stones, flagstones, ornamental stones and
also large quantities of limestone for the manufacture of
cement and lime. The deposit of this clay is located on
the top of a hill in the vicinity of Lakhanpur village.
Lakhanpur is situated at a distance of about 3l miles from
the Tikuria railway station, near Manikpur, on the
Allahabad-Katni section of the Great Indian Peninsula
Railway. The locality is also approachable from the
Markundi railway station, on the same section of the
railway and is connected by a road maintained by the
Govt. Forest Department. The labour and transport from
either of the above mentioned railway stations are cheap
and easily accessible. At present the clay is being quarried
in small quantities for local use, perhaps for whitewashing
purposes. It is said that it is sent out in small
quantities but as far as known to the authors no suitable
use is made of it so far. |
