Abstract
The process by which gas is obtained from coal is a chemical operation known as destructive distillation and technically called carbonisation. By low temperature carbonisation is understood the destructive distillation of coal at temperatures round about 6ooec. instead of at the higher temperatures nsed in the gas and coke-oven industries. The chief aims of low temperature coal carbonisation are :- (1) To produce maximum amount of gas of high calorific value. (2) To produce smokeless fuel suitable for domestic and other purposes. (3) To produce maximum amount of fuel oil of low specific gravity. Due to the limited coal deposits of India, it is but necessary to organise a sound national fuel industry.
