Abstract
There is a general complaint m various analytical laboratories that the element used in the laboratory electric muffles very often fuses and requires replacement due to over-heating. There are a number of electric muffles that are fitted with automatic electromagnetic make and break; but by far the larger number of laboratory electric muffles working in the country are without the provision of this arrangement. In these days of war, it is difficult to obtain the automatic electro-magnetic arrangement. Due to the materials of construction not being available, it is not possible to construct this arrangement as a safety devise. As the laboratory electric muffles are seldom required for temperatures higher than 900°C, which temperature by itself is low enough to allow more or less perpetual life to beating elements of the crosssection generally employed. But due to no automatic control available and due to the little negligence on the part of the operators the temperature shoots up very much higher, with the result that the muffles get damaged and require constant repairs. It is becoming more and more difficult to obtain even nichrome wire for replacement. The writers of this note went into the question of construction of some automatic control whereby the life of these mu:ffies could be prolonged without much expense or worry.
