| Abstract |
| Slip casting is a simple manufacturing process used for ceramic powders, both monolithic and composite. The
process is inherently slow, predominantly governed by rheology of the slip and capillary action of the mould. The
objective of this study was to find out the relationship between temperature, rheology, casting rate and densification
for a well dispersed calcium hydroxyapatite slurry. In this study, slip casting was performed at four different
temperatures (5o, 25o, 45o and 65oC) using conventional radiant heating. It was observed that the casting rate
improved substantially with increase in temperature. At 65oC, casting rate was highest but compaction was poor
while at 45oC, highest compaction was observed along with uniform densification and homogeneous microstructure.
At 45oC, compaction took place mostly because of water removal through capillaries of the mould while at 65oC,
compaction was predominantly governed by evaporation. More was the evaporation, less was the green density. |
