| Abstract |
| This review article emphasizes the study and realization of chromium doped bulk
glasses as well as optical fibers elaborating the optical properties of various valence
states of chromium in bulk glasses or fibers for photonic applications. Initial discussion
on versatility of the field of application of near infrared (NIR) light sources drive
researches for finding appropriate light source being crucial indicates the propriety
of chromium doped glass-based sources. The optical responses of different chromium
species within suitable glass host are briefed with perspective of the host’s chemical
composition (glass basicity/optical basicity). Glass hosts are emphasized due to their
applicability in fiber optics and photonics sectors. Various valence states of chromium
(+2 to +6) can be a candidate for optical applications. A summary of advantages of
glass-based chromium doped optical fibers are mentioned with a standpoint of
fabrication methods. The discussion continues with the chromium doped glasses in
some specific areas of applications, such as saturable absorber, dosimetry, and
temperature sensing and luminescent solar concentrator separately.
