Abstract
In this investigation an attempt has been made to prepare TiC fibres by the vapour-liquid-solid (V-L-S) method from a reaction mixture consisting of TiO2-NaCl-C-Ni raw materials. The reduction of TiO2(s) by activated carbon takes place in presence of molten NaCl(l) during which TiO2 and Ni constituents react with NaCl and C to form TiCl4(g), NiCl2(g), NiTi(l) and TiO(g) at high temperatures between 1473 and 1573 K. The growth of fibres proceeds by the chemical interaction of TiO(g)– NiTi(l) – Ti(l) – C(s) constituents through V-L-S mechanism. The XRD analysis of the product obtained after reaction at 1573 K for 180 minutes in argon atmosphere shows peaks of pure TiC powder. The SEM analysis of TiC product obtained after flotation and acid leaching showed fibre morphology over 80% by volume of the product while the remaining 20% showed fine particles with faceted morphology.
