Abstract
The work environment refers to the conditions which are prevalent around the workplace where the worker performs his work. These conditions have a significant effect on the well being and efficiency of the workers. Bad working conditions will increase strain on workmen, reduce their efficiency and ultimately result in lower productivity. The Ceramic Manufacturing Systems present a hostile combination of job stressors such as air pollution (by various floating dusts, vapours etc) noise pollution and heat stress. In these industries, the physical and chemical agents, that are possible health hazards, are present in the raw materials, in the processing of raw materials and in the final products or byproducts. In view of the menacing role of environment in these industries, a survey is made in four categories of ceramic industries located in the Adilabad, Warangal, Godavari and Hyderabad districts of Andhra Pradesh. On the basis of the observations of the survey, an attempt is made in this paper to characterize the environment and its effects on the well being of the operators. Further, the paper focuses attention on the environmental assessment applicable to ceramic manufacturing systems.
