Abstract
Tetragonal zirconia powders containing 1-5 mol?~ Y 10J were
prepared by the sol-gel technique and wnsolidated to dense ceramic.-;
by cold pressing and sintering as well as by hot pressing. TZP
ceramics of nearly theoretical density could be obtained by hot
pressing the powders at a considerably low temperature of 1500°C.
Ceramic compositions having 3 mol% Y 10J exhibited the maximum
strength and fracture toughnes.i. Hot pressed ceramics were found
to he superior to those obtained by atmosphere sintering in respect
of sinterability, microstructural control and mechanical property
