Abstract
Polycrystalline zirconia fibres containing 0-20 mol% CaO were synthesized by the sol-gel technique. Gel fibres of up to about 70-80 em length and 15-20 micrometer diameter were produced at ambient temperature from spinnable acetate sols made from zirconium oxychloride. Oxide fibres were obtained by calcining the precursor gel fibres at 1000°·C. The gel and calcined fibres were characterized by FTIR studies, differential thermal analysis/thermogravimetry, X-ray diffractometry and optical microscopy. Complete removal of the acetate groups at soo•c was confirmed by FTIR studies. Zr02-Ca0 fibres were found to contain only tetragonal (t-) and cubic (c-) forms of Zr02 after heating at 1000°C. The crystallite size of Zr02 in such fibres showed an inverse relationship with increase in CaO-content.
