Abstract
Production of bricks and tiles from red and coastal clays, overlying
large tracts of Orissa state, is often associated with problems
during shaping, drying and firing stages. These problems arise as
a result of large variations in the particle grading and texture of
clays available in the region as also the presence of extraneous
constituents as iron oxide, soluble salts, organic matter etc in
excessive proportions. Investigations undertaken on such clays at
the Institute show that heavy clay products conforming to relevant
BIS specifications can be manufactured from the processed clays/
clay admixtures available in the region.
